Charlotte Hill ... TALKS IMPACT

Only two of these three things are true …

‘I am second cousin to Geoff Capes, formally the World’s Strongest Man. I regularly swim in the sea on Boxing Day. I have Chris Waddle’s autograph 8 times.’

Charlotte Hill OBE became CEO of The Felix Project in January 2022. Previously, she led Step Up To Serve and the #iwill campaign from 2014 to 2020 and served as Chief Executive of UK Youth from 2010 to 2014. Her career began in Parliament, working for Rt. Hon. Harriet Harman QC MP, followed by roles at NSPCC and in Australia with a government relations consultancy and a children’s charity. She then worked in Cambodia on her way back to the UK, teaching English in an orphanage. She joined UK Youth in April 2009.

Alongside her Trustee role at EFL Trust, Charlotte is an RSA Fellow and a Board member of Westminster House Youth Club in her local area. In 2012 Charlotte received the award of “Rising CEO Star” at The Charity Times Awards, in 2016 she became Alumna of the Year at the University of Birmingham and in 2019 she was ordained into the Order of the British Empire for services to young people.

We sat down with Charlotte to ask a few questions about social impact –

What is your personal motivation for creating social impact?

To make the world a fairer place

What’s been the best impact you’ve seen in your career?

I’ve always been struck by the impact of WaterAid giving tens of millions of people access to clean water and decent toilets over the years.  Access to clear water has such a huge impact on both health and happiness and their focus on their specific contribution and model and how they increase their impact is impressive.

What frustrates you most about people/ businesses/ organisations trying to achieve impact?

When they’re not really talking about, or understanding, impact.  Just focusing on numbers going up.  We’ve all been guilty of it at some stage.

If you could change anything about how people talk about and report impact, what would it be?

The above!!  Bigger isn’t always better.

What is your biggest wish with regards to the future of impact?

It just becomes the absolute norm for what we all do – across sectors not just ours.
